Men's Tennis Overcomes Charlotte, 6-1
February 09, 2020 | Men's Tennis
CHARLOTTE – The Princeton University men's tennis team put forth a strong overall performance Sunday when it overcame the University of North Carolina at Charlotte 6-1 at Lifetime Fitness.
"It was a good bounce-back performance today after Friday night's disappointing result," said head coach Billy Pate. "We learned from that match and got better from the experience. Charlotte is a very good team as they beat Clemson last weekend.
After a good doubles point today we lost four first sets and again dug ourselves a bit of a hole. However, from that point on we demonstrated a much more assertive and confident demeanor in finishing the match in strong fashion. We'll get a bit of rest and try to hopefully get some guys on mend from injuries and illness as we haven't quite been at full strength. We'll need to be at our best next weekend at the ECAC Championships."
Doubles
Princeton was able to secure the doubles point and gain the early advantage; No. 8 Ryan Seggerman and Payton Holden down Henry Lieberman and Benjamin Wayand 6-1 at the No. 1 position then at No. 3 Karl Poling and Bill Duo outlasted Ignasi de Rueda and Collin Thomson, 6-4.
Singles
Justin Barki started things off with a win for the Tigers at the No. 3 position, outlasting C. Christoforou 6-2, 6-2. Karl Poling defeated Henry Lieberman 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 then Will Peters earned a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory over de Rueda at No. 5.
Despite dropping the first set, Damian Rodriguez bounced back to defeat Leonardo Menezes 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4. Holden also suffered a setback in the opening set, but showed resilience to beat Thomson 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6.
