Despite Llewellyn’s Career Night, Men’s Basketball Comes up Just Short Against Cornell

PRINCETON, N.J. – Despite a career-high 30 points by sophomore Jaelin Llewellyn, the Princeton University men's basketball team came up just short Saturday night inside Jadwin Gymnasium, falling 85-82 to Cornell University.
Prior to the start of the game, a short ceremony was held honoring the Tigers' seniors; Richmond Aririguzoh, Will Gladson and Jose Morales.
Llewellyn led the game in scoring with a career-high 30 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including a 5-of-8 effort from three and a perfect 7-of-7 effort from the free throw line. He eclipsed his previous career-high of 28 points, which came at Drexel University on December 4, 2019.
Junior Jerome Desrosiers tied his career-high with 16 points, pulled down five rebounds and handed out two assists for Princeton while junior Ryan Schwieger also added 11 points. Aririguzoh finished with a game-high 10 rebounds.
Llewellyn continued his accuracy from deep, knocking down a three-pointer for Princeton's first basket of the game with 19:10 on the clock. With Princeton ahead 5-4, three-pointers from Llewellyn and Schwieger with 16:04 and 15:21 left to play saw Princeton surge ahead, 11-6.
A Schwieger layup with 13:16 remaining in the half saw Princeton take a 15-10 lead, but the Big Red would knot the score at 18-18 with 9:52 on the clock. A Desrosiers driving layup with 9:32 remaining in the half put Princeton back on top, 20-18, but Cornell would again tie it up at 23-23. Desrosiers proceeded to drain three-pointers with 8:13 and 7:02 remaining in the half to give the Tigers the lead once again, 29-23.
The Big Red managed to keep it close, but Llewellyn spun the laid it in with 2:32 on the clock to give Princeton a 37-33 advantage. Sophomore Ethan Wright sank a long three-pointer with 1:52 remaining and Princeton would take a 40-37 advantage into the half.
Llewellyn opened the second half as he opened the first, sinking his fourth three-pointer with 19:32 left to play and giving Princeton a 43-39 lead. The Big Red would take a 46-45 advantage with 17:36 on the clock, but another Llewellyn three-pointer with 17:12 remaining saw Princeton jump ahead, 48-46.
Cornell would then surge ahead, using an 8-0 run to take a 54-48 lead with 14:56 remaining. With 11:57 on the clock, the Big Red had extended its advantage to 10 points at 61-51.
A freshman Drew Friberg corner three-pointer with 11:03 remaining trimmed the lead to 63-57, but the Big Red would extend its lead once again with 7:53 remaining to 71-59.
Freshman Ryan Langborg sank a corner three-pointer with 4:41 on the clock that made it a 76-68 contest then Llewellyn would add another layup with 1:32 remaining that gave the Tigers a 79-78 advantage.
With 0:13 remaining, the Big Red had taken an 83-79 lead but a three-point play by Aririguzoh narrowed Cornell's lead to one point with 0:06 left to play. Despite Princeton's late rally, Cornell would hold on for the 85-82 victory.
