Women's Volleyball Falls to Brown, 3-1

PRINCETON, N.J. – Despite a valiant effort, the Princeton University women's volleyball team fell 3-1 (26-24, 22-25, 25-23, 25-22) to Brown University Saturday night inside Dillon Gymnasium.
The setback halted Princeton's win streak at 11 matches, and has the Tigers sitting with a 6-1 record in Ivy League play. Junior Avery Luoma led the Tigers in kills with 17, and junior Lindsey Kelly the match in assists with a career-high 56, besting her previous career-high of 54 from the Tigers win over Temple University on Saturday, September 18. Junior Cameron Dames had a team-high 25 digs, while senior Julia Schner led the Tigers in blocks with six.
The opening set began as back-and-forth battle, but at 3-3 the Bears used a 4-0 run to jump ahead, 7-3. Following back-to-back junior Melina Mahood kills followed by a junior Olivia Schewe kill, Princeton would knot the score at 8-8. Little could separate the teams, as a an Elena Montgomery kill tied it up at 12-12; the Bears would respond with a 3-0 run to gain a 15-12 advantage. Following a timeout, Princeton used a 4-0 run to take a 17-15 lead, however Brown bounce back to take a 22-21 advantage from which they would hold on to win the set, 26-24.
Montgomery's fifth kill gave Princeton a 3-1 lead in the second set, but Brown responded with a pair of 3-0 run to jump ahead, 8-5. With Brown up 12-7, a Montgomery kill sparked a 5-0 run that knotted the score at 12-12. The Tigers and Bears continued to trade points throughout the set, and the Tigers would take a lead at 22-21 following a Brown attacking error. A kill by Schewe would seal it for Princeton 25-22.
Schner led from the front in the third set, recording three-straight kills followed by a block to give Princeton a 5-1 lead. Brown fought back to take the lead, but a kill by freshman Mariah Haislip tied it up at 17-17, then the Tigers would take the lead following a Montgomery kill. Despite Princeton's 20-18 advantage, Brown would win the set with a score of 25-23.
Brown carried its momentum into the fourth set, using a 3-0 run to take an 8-4 lead. Princeton narrowed the margin to one at 12-11 following kills by Schner and Luoma, but the Bears would then take control of the set, earning match point at 24-16. Sparked by a Luoma kill, Princeton used a 6-0 run to stave off consecutive match points, but Brown ultimately prevailed, 25-22.
