Princeton (12 points) and No. 20 Cornell (nine points) are set to battle on Saturday at Sherrerd Field, with the Tigers looking to retain sole possession of first place in the Ivy League as the Ancient Eight hits the stretch run. A Princeton win would put the Tigers six points clear of the Big Red with two Ivy games remaining. Yale enters this weekend with eight points in the Ivy League, the only other team within striking distance of the Ivy lead.
The Tigers have won five games in a row -- their longest winning streak since capturing the final five games of the 2014 season and the first of 2015 and the sixth-longest active winning streak in Division I men's soccer. The Big Red are 10-1-1 in their last 12 games, the lone loss a 1-0 defeat at Yale following a Bulldogs' goal in the 85th minute.
According to the stat sheet, expect a game filled with firepower. Cornell leads the country in shots on goal-per-game (8.6), while the Tigers (7.6) rank No. 7 in the country.
Individually, the Ivy League's two most potent offensive players will be on the field Saturday afternoon. The Tigers send out Kevin O'Toole who is fresh off garnering United Soccer Coaches and TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Week honors. For the season, he 21 points (7g, 7a) which includes a run of seven goals and three assists over Princeton's five-game winning streak. His 16 points in four Ivy games are seven more than the closest competitor.
Cornell's Tyler Bagley has 31 points this season on 12 goals and seven assists -- his 2.38 points-per-game leading the country and his 12 goals ranking No. 6 in the nation. In Ivy play, he has three goals and four assists.
For Kevin O'Toole, the recent offensive explosion has brought with it a move up the Princeton record books. The 2018 Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year has already set career highs in goals, assists and points. His seven assists this season are tied for No. 8 in a season by a Tiger and his 16 career assists have him tied for No. 4 all-time by a Tiger -- he recently moved out of a tie with six other players for fifth all-time, including Jesse Marsch and Antoine Hoppenot.
The last time these two teams met was 11/2/2019, a 1-1 tie at Princeton. Walker Gillespie scored for Princeton in the eighth minute, and Cornell tied it on a John Scearce goal in the 67th minute.
