
Men's Soccer Dispatches #20 Cornell, 2-1, To Remain In First Place

Princeton (10-5--0, 5-0-0 Ivy) won its sixth game in a row, knocking off No. 20 Cornell at Sherrerd Field, 2-1. With the win, the Tigers have reached 10+ wins for the 15th time in program history and have now done so for in three consecutive seasons for the first time in program history.
Princeton Men's Soccer beat #20 Cornell 2-1 to remain atop of the Ivy League with two games left to play. With the win, the Tigers remained undefeated inside the Ivy League, and will enter the final two weeks of the season alone in first place with 15 points. The Big Red fall to 3-2-0 inside the Ivy League and can now do no better than a tie for first in the Ancient Eight. Yale, who entered the week in third with eight points, is currently playing at Columbia. If the Bulldogs lose or tie, Princeton will secure an Ivy League championship.

The game changed in the 27th minute when forward Walker Gillespie found himself in on goal before being taken down by Cornell defender Henry Hylbert. Hylbert was shown a straight red card, leaving Cornell playing a man down for the rest of the game.

Princeton immediately made use of the man advantage, with forward Walker Gillespie heading in a goal off of a corner kick from senior Kevin O'Toole a minute later.

The Tigers (10-5-0, 5-0-0 Ivy) went up by two on the Big Red (10-3-1, 3-2 Ivy) in the second half when Kevin O'Toole found junior forward Daniel Diaz-Bonilla in open space on the counterattack in the 55th minute. Diaz-Bonilla calmly dribbled around a Cornell defender before rocketing the ball into the top corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Cornell made a late push to tie the game, scoring a goal in the 86th minute when Griffin Garrard knocked home a score. The Big Red pressured until the very last minute, but Princeton's strong defense was able to keep them at bay and preserve the Tiger victory.
Senior goalkeeper Jack Roberts had a great day in net, ending the game with 11 saves. One crucial moment was when he made two saves in a 10-second span, allowing the Tigers to stay 1-0 ahead in the first half.

Captain Kevin O'Toole had another excellent game, assisting on both of Princeton's goals. O'Toole's two assists give him 23 points this season on seven goals and nine assists. His nine helpers during the 2021 season are tied for No. 3 all-time by a Tiger and most since 1993. For his career, O'Toole now has 15 goals and 18 assists for 48 points. His 18 career assists are No. 4 all-time by a Princeton player.
O'Toole has seven goals and seven assists over his last eight games, including at least a point in six consecutive games -- with 19 total points over his last half-dozen games.
The Tigers are on the road next weekend, taking on Penn in Philly at 7 p.m.
