Men’s Track & Field Begins Indoor Season at TCNJ Winter Open

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University men's track & field team officially begins its 2021-22 campaign Saturday at The College of New Jersey Winter Open at 6 p.m. inside the Armory in New York, New York.

A Look at the Tigers
The Tigers will look to make it seven-consecutive Ivy League Indoor Championships, and win their 24th in school history. At the most recent Ivy League Indoor Heptagonal Championships, in 2020, Princeton won seven events and finished with 173 points; Harvard was second with 116.
William M. Weaver Jr. '34 Head Coach of Men's Track & Field Fred Samara will look to win his 24th Ivy League Indoor Championship. Along with Ivy League Coach of the Year, Samara was also honored as the USTFCCCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2019-20.
The Tigers return senior Sam Ellis, who was the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Regional Athlete of the Year and an NCAA Championships qualifier in the mile in 2020. Ellis was also part of the DMR team that won an Ivy League title in 2020, and won the 1,000 at Heps.
Senior Andrei Iosivas, who was the Most Outstanding Field Performer at 2020 Indoor Heps, is also back for Princeton. Iosivas won the Heptathlon and earned First Team All-Ivy League honors in 2020 and 2019. Senior C.J. Licata also returns; he won the shot put at Indoor Heps and earned First Team All-Ivy League honors in 2020 and 2019.
Senior Jeffrey Hollis, the Ivy League Champion and a First Team All-Ivy League selection in the High Jump in 2020 and 2018 is back for the Tigers. Senior Greg Sholars, the Runner-Up in 2020 and 2019, and a two-time Second Team All-Ivy League honoree in the 200 also returns, as senior Ed Trippas, who was Runner-Up and earned Second Team All-Ivy League honors in the 5,000 in 2020. Trippas also represented Australia in the steeplechase at the Tokyo Olympics.
Senior Dayo Abeeb was the Ivy League Runner-Up and a Second Team All-Ivy League selection in 2020, and senior Michael Phillippy was the Ivy League Runner-Up and a Second Team All-Ivy League honoree in the 400 in 2020.
Junior Sondre Guttormsen will compete as a Tiger for the first time in 2021-22. He represented Norway at the Tokyo Olympics in the pole vault, and is the Norwegian national record holder. Guttormsen earned Season Team All-America honors in the pole vault at the NCAA National Indoor Championships in 2019.
Princeton welcomes 15 newcomers in 2021-22; Nicholas Bendsten, Malcolm Bevans, Connor Chen, Sebastian Clatworthy, Ilay Furman, John Hogan, Philip Kastner, Tyler Konopka, Albert Kreutzer, Daniel O'Brien, Chris Paige, Kaden Reynolds, Sam Rodman, Avery Shunneson, and Harrison Witt.
