April 25, 2021 | Women's Track and Field
PRINCETON, N.J. – Competing in its first outdoor meet since the 2018-19 season, the Princeton University women's track & field team wasted little time rewriting the record book Sunday inside Weaver Stadium on an afternoon highlighted by freshman Kate Joyce setting a new program record in the javelin.
"It is difficult to find the words to express how awesome it was to see Weaver Stadium decked out in its full meet glory," said Head Coach Michelle Eisenreich. "The presence of so many of our administrators and President Eisgruber only added to the excitement our women brought to the day. Across the events our women performed like they have been training – with focus, determination and fire. The additions to our top 10-lists is proof of their efforts! A special congratulations to Kara Steele, Obiageri Amaechi and Kate Joyce who all produced marks that are currently ranked high enough to qualify for the NCAA First Round Championships."
Joyce burst onto the scene in spectacular fashion, breaking the school record in the javelin. Her mark of 50.44 meters eclipsed the previous record of 48.01 meters, set by Rylie Pease at the University of North Florida in 2019. Joyce's mark would have earned a top-13 finish at the 2018-19 NCAA Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Joyce was joined in the javelin by Julia Harisay, whose throw of 40.20 meters ranked ninth all-time in school history and bested her previous PR of 38.33 meters set in 2018 at the Sam Howell Invitational Oluwatise Okeremi also made her collegiate debut, throwing 35.38 meters.
Kara Steele's mark of 12.56 meters in the triple jump saw her move up to No. 2 on Princeton's all-time list in outdoor. Her previous PR was 12.31 meters, earned at Miami in 2019. Sophomore Tia Rozario also moved to ninth-all time in school history after a jump of 11.95 meters.
Freshman Casey Burton had a stellar collegiate debut, her mark of 5.77 meters in the long jump was the fifth-best in school history. Rozario also earned a spot in the all-time top-10 list in the long jump following a leap of 5.71 meters. Megan Ogawa (5.49 meters) and Andelyn Granskog (5.38 meters) also competed in the long jump.
Luisa Chantler Edmond also had a tremendous day in the hammer throw as her throw of 53.69 meters was the six-furthest in school history. It tops her previous PR of 52.23 meters from the 2019 ECAC Championships.
