von Mueller and Benedikter Lead Germany 8+ To Bronze To Finish U-23 World Rowing Championships

RACICE, Czech Republic – Tassilo von Mueller '21 and Floyd Benedikter '23 helped lead the Germany 8+ to a bronze medal in a thrilling final race during at the U-23 World Rowing Championships today.
A wildly entertaining race started with four boats within five meters of each other at the first 500 with Germany leading the way. The United States jumped in front at the 1,000m point with Italy right on its heels just a tenth of a second back with Germany and Great Britain looming. The United States still held on to its advantage at 1500m, but Germany and Great Britain remained less than a half second behind. The three boats appeared almost neck and neck during the last 500m push before Great Britain caught the United States at the last moment to take the gold (5:34.55). Germany earned the bronze at 5:35.58.
"I am so pumped for Tass and Floyd on rowing such a gutsy race today," said Princeton head coach Greg Hughes. "That bronze medal was hard fought for and well deserved. It's a great way to finish off a crazy and challenging year. They've worked very both here at Princeton and in Germany to overcome the obstacles presented by COVID-19. Through it all, they've stayed focused and tough in order to arrive at this today. Huge congratulations to Tass and Floyd!"
