Tokyo Olympics Preview: Men's Rowing

The Princeton Tigers will have four alumni racing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as rowing gets underway this week.
Tom George '18 (Great Britain), Tim Masters '15 (Australia) and Nick Mead '17 (United States) will be racing for their country's eight while Fred Vystavel '16 (Denmark) will race in the 2- event. Mike Zimmer '88 is a team manager for the United States.
"We're very excited to see all of our Princeton alums head to the line to race," said Princeton head coach Greg Hughes. "They've taken on many challenges over the past 16 months to get to arrive at this moment and it's finally here. Good luck and go Tigers!"
On the international stage, George has won six medals with the eight, highlighted by a gold and two silvers at the Rowing World Cup. At Princeton, George helped the varsity eight to three medals at Eastern Sprints, led by a silver in 2016. He also led the eight to four top five finishes at IRAs including in a bronze in 2016.
Masters aided Australia in securing a silver at the 2018 World Rowing Championships. He picked up golds in the in the four at 2019 World Cup II and III along with silvers at the 2017 and 2018 World Rowing Cup III. At Princeton, the former Tiger stroked the V8 to a bronze medal at the 2015 IRA Championships, the team's first V8 medal since 2006. The V8 won bronze at Eastern Sprints and won the Rowe Cup for the first time in 2005. Masters also netted a bronze at Easterns in 2014.
For the United States, Mead's top accolade includes a second-place finish in the eight at the 2017 World Rowing Championships. As a Tiger, Mead collected three medals at the IRA Championships highlighted by a 2V silver in 2014. He also secured two bronzes for the V8 and finished fourth in 2017.
Vystavel corralled three silver medals at Easterns and IRA for the 2V along with a bronze in the V8 at Princeton. Internationally, he placed fourth for Denmark at the 2019 World Cup III in the 4-, second in the 2- at the 2020 European Championships and second in the 2021 Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in the 2- to qualify for Tokyo.
