Tokyo Olympics Preview: Women's Rowing
July 21, 2021 | Women's Rowing - Open, Women's Rowing - Lightweight
The Princeton Tigers will have four alumnae racing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as rowing gets underway this week.
Claire Collins '19 (4-) and Gevvie Stone '07 (2x) will race for the United States while Hannah Scott '21 (4x) races for Great Britain. Kathleen Noble '18 will represent Uganda in the 1x. Kate Bertko '06 is coaching the United States women's pair.
At Princeton, Collins was a four-time Ivy champion, All-Ivy honoree and three-time All-American. She finished her senior year with the C. Otto von Kienbusch Award and was nominated for NCAA's Woman of the Year honor. Internationally, Collins won bronze at the 2018 World Rowing U-23 Championships and collected silver the year prior.
Noble is the first Ugandan to ever row at the Olympics. At the 2019 FISA African Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta, she won the 1x event by 2.97 seconds to qualify. With Princeton, she won two medals at Easterns.
Stone reached the Olympics in 2012 in the single sculls race, placing seventh. She improved her mark in 2016, nabbing a silver medal in the same event. She became the 20th Princeton athlete to win a medal at the Olympics. With Tigers, Stone was part of the 2006 NCAA V8 Championship boat which is widely considered one of the greatest varsity boats of all-time. It went undefeated that season, winning each race by at least seven seconds.
Scott was two-time Ivy champion with the Tigers, securing All-America status in 2019. She helped the Tigers to two top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships. She earned a silver medal at the 2021 European Rowing Championships.
"We are so proud of the Tigers competing at the Olympics," said Princeton Open Rowing head coach Lori Dauphiny. "All have made a significant impact in our program. I guess you really never know what will happen but especially during this Olympic cycle it took blind faith, strength and resilience! They are superstars and have worked hard for the opportunity to race at the highest level by giving it their all. They continue to impress and inspire us! We wish them the best of luck. Go Tigers!"
