Women's Soccer Team Opens Princeton's Athletic Year with Win over Loyola
August 27, 2021 | Women's Soccer
The new athletic year began for Princeton University on Friday night, and it began with a win.
In front of a Class of 1952 Stadium crowd long waiting to root Tigers on, the Princeton women's soccer team used a 33rd-minute penalty-kick goal from Gabi Juarez and a 59th-minute rebound from Kamryn Loustau to pick up a 2-1 win over Loyola (Md.) on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.
"To say tonight was special would be a massive understatement," Princeton coach Sean Driscoll said. "Sharing this evening with our student-athletes, coaches, and fans after 656 days away from competition was indescribable. The myriad of emotions flowing through everyone was easy to see from the minute the whistle blew until the horn to end the game. Our team gave the audience a very clear picture of how much they missed playing and how much they value representing this amazing institution. I am extremely proud of every one of them. It is also essential to thank the students and other fans who attended tonight's game. A special thanks to the football and water polo teams who were behind our bench and helping provide an atmosphere, which was among the best I have ever witnessed at a college soccer game."
Loyola's (1-2) Sarah Mirr converted a penalty kick with less than 10 minutes to go to get the Greyhounds on the board. Both of the PKs were due to handballs in the 18.
Princeton outshot Loyola 27-8 overall and 12-2 on goal. The win moved senior keeper Grace Barbara to 4-0 in her career as a Tiger, while Loustau's goal was the junior's second and Juarez earned her sixth career goal.
The play that led to Loustau's goal began on an Amy Paternoster corner kick. Juarez tried to send it in, and when it was blocked by a Loyola defender on the goal line, Loustau put back the rebound.
Princeton will return to '52 Stadium to complete the two-match home weekend Sunday at 11 a.m. against Saint Joseph's.
