Tokyo Olympics: Johnson '17 and U.S. Rally To Defeat ROC; Get To Gold Medal Game

TOKYO – Ashleigh Johnson '17 and the United States Women's Water Polo Team rallied from a first-half deficit to take down the Russian Olympic Committee, 15-11, in the Olympics Semifinals on Thursday morning.

Evgeniya Soboleva gave the ROC a 3-2 lead after eight minutes of action. The ROC collected the first two tallies of the second frame to go in front by three. Trailing 7-4 with 48 seconds left remaining, the U.S got goals from Maddie Musselman and Melissa Seidemann to get within one, 7-6, at the break.

Even at 8-all with 6:22 to go in the third stanza, the United States registered two straight and took a 11-9 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The ROC didn't go away, tying the contest at 11-all with 5:30 left. The United States collected four straight tallies, jumping ahead 15-11 and putting the game away.

Musselman posted five goals while Maggie Steffens snagged a hat trick. Johnson finished with eight stops in the win.

The United States will go for its third straight gold medal against Spain on Saturday at 3:30 a.m.
