Water Polo Splits Doubleheader with #9 Indiana, #24 Pomona-Pitzer at Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO — Taking a dominant win over #24 Pomona-Pitzer and falling narrowly to #9 Indiana, the Princeton women's water polo team split a doubleheader at the Aztec Invitational on Saturday in San Diego.
Facing #24 Pomona-Pitzer, the Tigers were first to strike with a first period goal by Charlotte Riches.
The Sagehens equalized a minute later, which the Tigers responded to by adding three more goals with Shanna Davidson scoring two and Ava Houlahan adding another.
With one more Pomona-Pitzer goal before the break, and another Tiger goal by Kendall Wyer, it was 5-2 Princeton after one.
The Tigers, hungry for more, got to work again in the second quarter, adding three to the lead with Emese Batizi adding her name to the scoresheet and Riches and Houlahan finding their second goals of the game.
Pomona-Pitzer got one back for an 8-3 score at the half.
In the third quarter, Davidson scored three in a row off a penalty and two run-of-play goals. Houlahan added another for her third of the game, and Vivian Golub converted on a power play to make it 13-3 Tigers.
Pomona-Pitzer got two goals back while converting on a power play in the fourth quarter. With each side adding one more to the tally as Houlahan made it four on the contest, Princeton took the win with a final score of 14-6.
Against #9 Indiana, the Tigers stayed even with the Hoosiers, ending the first quarter trailing 4-3 with goals by Davidson and Olivia Krotts.
Equalizing with another goal from Davidson and finding one more from Ava Houlahan in the second quarter, Princeton again trailed by one at the half with a scoreline of 6-5.
Pushing in the third quarter, Princeton took the 9-8 lead with two goals by Davidson and two from Ally Lurie and Charlotte Riches.
After Indiana equalized, Houlahan gave Princeton the lead again with five minutes on the clock. However, the Hoosiers had the last word as they scored two more to close out the game, 11-10.
Up next, the Tigers will return home to DeNunzio pool as they host Michigan on Saturday, March 21.
