Women's Volleyball Downs Penn in Ivy Opener, 3-0

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team opened Ivy League play on a high note, downing the University of Pennsylvania 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-8) Friday night inside Dillon Gymnasium.
The match was led in kills by juniors Avery Luoma and Elena Montgomery, who had 11 each. Junior Lindsey Kelly had a match-high 34 assists along with a match-high 11 digs. Kelly, along with Luoma and junior Cameron Dames each tied for the match-high in service aces, with two. Senior Julia Schner added a career and match-high seven blocks.
The opening set started off as a back-and-forth battle, until a Luoma kill with the Tigers up 7-6 sparked a 4-0 run that saw Princeton take an 11-6 lead. A Dames service ace would give Princeton set point at 24-16, and the Tigers would manage to hold on for the 25-18 victory in the first set.
Penn came out with renewed focus in the second set and kept it close early. Ahead 12-10, the Tigers would go on a 6-0 run sparked by a Montgomery kill that saw Princeton surge ahead, 18-10. Princeton then took a 21-16 lead, and closed the set out on a 4-0 run led off by a junior Olivia Schewe kill to prevail 25-16.
The third set was all Tigers; Princeton would open on a 9-0 run, only halted a Quaker timeout. The set began as it started, with the Tigers up 17-8, a kill by junior Melina Mahood led an 8-0 run that saw Princeton triumph in the set, 25-8.

The Tigers return to Dillon Gymnasium on Friday, October 1, at 7 p.m. to host Dartmouth University (8-1).
