January 08, 2022 | Men's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. – A final second heave for the win. A career-high 14 points. His first career start. It was a birthday to remember for sophomore Matt Allocco, as he played the role of hero down the stretch for the Princeton University men's basketball team as it overcame an 18-point deficit to defeat Cornell University, 72-70, Saturday night inside Jadwin Gymnasium.
The victory, Princeton's seventh-straight, moved the Tigers to 2-0 in Ivy League play. It also saw Princeton move to 9-0 inside Jadwin Gymnasium in 2021-22.
Senior Drew Friberg finished with a game-high 16 points and tied for the game-high in rebounds with eight, while junior Tosan Evbuomwan added 15 points, eight rebounds, and a game-high five assists. Allocco added a career-high 14 points on 4-for-7 shooting, while junior Ryan Langborg finished with 11 points.
While the Big Red led 6-4 at the first media timeout with 15:23 on the clock, Allocco made the most of his first start and scored the Tigers first four points. Cornell responded by extending their lead to 18-9 with 10:15 on the clock, but a Friberg layup at 9:46 sparked a 6-0 run that saw Princeton make it an 18-15 contest with 8:45 remaining in the half.
The Tigers looked to bounce back in the second half with help from Evbuomwan layups at 19:26 and 16:32, but Cornell held a 47-29 lead at the first media timeout with 15:56 left to play. Back-to-back Friberg three-pointers made it a 12-point game at 47-35 with 13:53 remaining, then an and one by senior Ethan Wright with 10:48 on the clock sparked a 6-0 Tiger run that narrowed the margin to 53-45 at 10:14.
A long three-pointer by Allocco made it a 60-54 game with 6:07 on the clock, then a Langborg three-pointer with 4:32 remaining sparked an 8-0 run that knotted the score, 64-64, at 3:07.
With 0:23 remaining, Wright drained a pair of free throws to give the Tigers a 69-68 lead, but with 0:06 on the clock a Cornell layup gave the Big Red a 70-69 advantage. In the dying moments, Allocco caught a pass from Langborg just steps in from the half court line. With a pair of Cornell defenders in his face and time expiring, he launched a desperation heave that was all net. The Tigers would come out on top, 72-70.
