Princeton Tops Brown For Ivy Title, NCAA Bid
October 30, 2022 | Field Hockey
There is the kind of history you want to make and kind of history you want to avoid. Sometimes, you can do both on the same day.
Â
The 2022 Princeton field hockey team added another piece to the extraordinary legacy of the program while also avoiding an unwanted blip in that legacy by defeating Brown 2-0 on Bedford Field Sunday afternoon.
Â
With the win, Princeton clinches at least a share of the 27th Ivy League championship in program history, which is two more than every other team in the league combined. A win next week at Columbia, or a Harvard loss at Yale, would mean an outright Ivy title.
Â
Regardless of next week, Princeton has also clinched the Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, which begins in two weeks. These two accomplishments came one year after the Tigers were kept from both by an excruciatingly close margin, and once the clock reached all zeroes, Princeton had avoided missing out on an Ivy title and NCAA berth in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1992 and 1993.
Â
The game began with a Senior Day celebration for the eight members of the TFH Class of 2023. When all eight started the game, it brought the total number of starts for that group to 361.
Â
Of course, between the celebration to start the game and the one when it ended, there was the matter of having to win the game, something that was not easy in the least. Princeton and Brown came in as the two highest scoring teams in the league, but this would be a defensive battle. There'd be two shots in the first quarter (both by Princeton) and one in the second (by Brown), and neither found the cage.
Â
The only shot of the third quarter off a penalty corner, and it was a big one, as Beth Yeager sent the ball towards the cage and Autumn Brown redirected it in for her fourth goal of the season and the first goal of the day. Her big goal also came on her birthday.
Â
Â
That's about a perfect Sunday.

Princeton doubled its lead early in the fourth quarter, but not before Brown almost tied it first when Imogen Govan sent a reverse rocket that seemed headed to the far corner until Robyn Thompson kicked it away at the last second. Less than a minute later, Sammy Popper ripped in her own reverse shot, after Grace Schulze had brought it into the circle. And Princeton breaks through early in the third. Autumn Brown tips in a Beth Yeager drive off a penalty corner, and it's 1-0 Tigers. pic.twitter.com/ZLzOHjYASW

Â
After that, the outcome wasn't in doubt. When it did end, Princeton had sewn up the two big prizes that are the goal each season. A celebration of eight seniors to start. A championship and postseason berth to end. Here, by the way, is the Robyn Thompson save that preceded the Popper goal. Tigers still up 2-0 with four minutes to go. pic.twitter.com/yMtQ9h7fLV
