Men’s Basketball Falls Just Short at Cornell, 88-83

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Princeton University men's basketball team fell just short, 88-83, against Cornell University Friday night inside Newman Arena.
Junior Tosan Evbuomwan tied his career-high with 27 points on 10-for-17 shooting from the field, and also pulled down seven rebounds, handed out a team-high four assists, and recorded a game-high five steals. Senior Ethan Wright added 26 points on 10-for-16 shooting, with his 10 made field goals being a career-high, and had a game-high eight rebounds.
Due to University COVID-19 protocols, Franklin C. Cappon-Edward C. Green '40 Head Coach Mitch Henderson did not coach the game. Ted Athanassiades '61 Associate Head Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Brett MacConnell served as acting head coach.
Wright exploded offensively to start the game; by the time there was 17:26 on the clock, he had scored eight points and given Princeton a 10-6 advantage. Cornell would battle back, knotting the score at 12-12 with 15:28 left to play.
Senior Max Johns drilled a three-pointer from the left corner at 11:46 to give the Tigers a 20-19 lead, but the two teams continued to trade the lead until Evbuomwan knocked down a three from the top of the circle with 8:19 remaining, pushing Princeton ahead 31-28.
Cornell would then use a 7-0 run to take a 39-22 advantage, with 4:21 left in the half. A Wright three-point play at 2:00 narrowed the margin to 41-39, but the Big Red would take a 46-40 lead into halftime.
The Big Red extended its advantage to 50-40 with 19:15 on the clock, but a pull-up jumper by senior Jaelin Llewellyn followed by a Wright layup trimmed the margin to six points, making it a 50-44 contest with 17:18 left to play.
Senior Drew Friberg sank a three-pointer at 15:39 made it a 57-50 game as the Tigers continued to bounce back, then with 12:47 remaining, an Evbuomwan layup made it 61-57 as Princeton chipped away at the lead.
A three-point play by Evbuomwan with 10:17 sparked an 8-0 Princeton run, that made it a 72-70 contest following a Friberg three-pointer with 8:30 left to play.
Evbuomwan drained a pair of free throws with 3:17 remaining led off a 7-0 Tiger run, that saw Princeton take an 83-81 lead at 2:07 following a pull-up jumper by Llewellyn. Despite the Tigers' late rally, it was the Big Red who would hold on for the victory, with a final score of 88-83.
