Glory Wins Top-Ranked Battle, Marsh Gets Top-10 Win in Cornell Dual
February 05, 2022 | Wrestling
Both teams will head south to wrestle again on Sunday, with Princeton making the short trip to Rider for the latest installment of the Mercer County rivalry in a 4 p.m. start. Live video for that match will be available here, with live results here.
Princeton opened the match with a big win at 165, as Jake Marsh defeated No. 8-ranked Julian Ramirez in a 7-6 decision. Marsh trailed early after a first-period takedown helped Ramirez to a 2-1 lead after a period, and then after Marsh and Ramirez matched each other in the middle frame, Ramirez led 5-4 headed to the third. Marsh scored the first three points of the third period, adding a takedown to an escape to pull in front on the way to the win.
HUGE start for the Tigers!

"That was amazing," Princeton coach Chris Ayres said. "Great match for Jake Marsh. We knew he could do that, but he did it in a great way. He kept the heat on."
Cornell, though, took control of the match with four straight wins, capping the run with a bonus-point victory for No. 17 Lewis Fernandes at heavyweight over Matt Cover.
In the match at 174, Cornell's No. 10 Chris Foca used a pair of second-period takedowns to build a 7-2 lead going to the third period, and in a battle of ranked wrestlers at 184, Cornell's No. 17 Jonathan Loew had two second-period takedowns against No. 22 Travis Stefanik to take a 4-2 lead after a scoreless first period. Loew and Stefanik wrestled in the 2020 dual, and Stefanik's 10-4 win there gave Princeton a match-clinching 19-10 lead.
Another ranked matchup came at 197, where Princeton's No. 17 Luke Stout faced No. 19 Jacob Cardenas. The wrestlers traded an escape point, with Cardenas getting his in the second and Stout matching in the third on the way to overtime, where a Cardenas takedown won it and pushed Cornell's lead to 9-3. Cornell then added the 12-4 major decision from Fernandes to go up 12-3 as the match turned to the matchup of top-ranked wrestlers between Patrick Glory and Vito Arujau.
The high-scoring match at 125 saw Glory lead 6-4 after a period before Arujau used a pair of second-period takedowns to narrow that deficit to one at 9-8. A third-period takedown gave Glory and 11-8 lead and ended up being the difference.

Glory's win pulled Princeton within 13-6, and it was Glory's third win over a top-10 opponent at the time of the match this season, along with wins over No. 4 Brandon Courtney of Arizona State and No. 7 Devin Schroder of Purdue.
"Every time, he does it," Ayres said of Glory. "He's great for the team. He's the man. I can't wait to see him (compete). "I think (there's) three guys that are really kind of heads above maybe the rest of the group, so he's one of them. So, we're looking forward to seeing those matches. That was great to see."
Glory, too, is looking forward to more matches that will allow him to show where he stands on the national stage.
"This is the best physical and mental shape I've been in in my whole life," Glory said. "It's about just peaking in March, because none of these wins matter. None of these matches really matter. It's about how you preformed in March, and I know that."
Cornell, though, kept Princeton from getting closer with a 3-1 win at 133 for No. 27 Dom LaJoie over Princeton's Nick Kayal. Though Kayal took a 1-0 lead into the third, an escape for LaJoie knotted it up and a takedown gave LaJoie the lead and ultimately the win.
Danny Coles responded for Princeton with a, 8-5 win at 141, getting an early takedown and leading the rest of the way with JJ Wilson staying close throughout. Coles led 4-2 entering the third and used a pair of third-period takedowns to help close out the win.
