February 06, 2022 | Women's Ice Hockey
For the second straight game of China's three at the 2022 Olympics, Tiger alum Kim Newell '16 (Zhou Jiaying) got the start in net, and for the second straight game, China earned a win.
Newell made 32 stops in a 2-1 shootout win over Japan for the host country on Sunday morning (ET), moving China closer to advancing to the quarterfinals.
China will ensure a quarterfinal bid with a win or by advancing to a shootout in Monday's 8:10 a.m. ET game against Sweden.
Japan, which advanced to the quarterfinals with the point it gained by ending in a shootout against China, got a Akane Hosoyamada goal with less than two minutes to go in the first period to take a 1-0 lead it held into the third period.
Just 66 seconds into the third, Newell's teammate Hu Baozhen scored to tie it, and after the rest of the third and a five-minute OT, it remained 1-1.
In the shootout, Newell stopped all five Japanese shots, but counterpart Nana Fujimoto stopped the first two and got a miss on China's third attempt. With Newell already having made four stops in the shootout, teammate Mi Le scored on China's fourth attempt, and Newell followed with her fifth stop of the shootout to seal the win.
The Tiger women's hockey trio in Beijing will continue on Sunday night (ET), with Claire Thompson '20, Sarah Fillier '24 and Canada facing ROC at 11:10 p.m. ET. All five teams in Canada's group advance to the quarters, and Canada and the U.S. are the only 2-0-0 teams in Group A so far. The U.S. and Canada will have a pool-play game on Monday at 11:10 p.m. ET.
