Fillier Scores as Canada Wins Again, Newell and China Wrap Pool Round
February 07, 2022 | Women's Ice Hockey
Overnight in Beijing, Sarah Fillier '24, Claire Thompson '20 and the Canadian women's hockey team improved to 3-0 in pool play with a 6-1 win over ROC that saw Fillier score her fifth goal of the tournament, and Kim Newell '16 (Zhou Jiaying) played in her third game as China closed pool play with a 2-1 loss to Sweden.
The Canadians, who are assured of a quarterfinal berth by playing in Group A regardless of the strong results in pool play, saw Sarah Nurse score just 2:09 into the game, and Fillier scored only 20 seconds later to push Canada to a 2-0 lead and make it three times in three games that Fillier has scored in the first three minutes of play. Canada added two more goals in the second to take a 4-1 lead into the third and scored twice more in the final period on the way to the 6-1 win.
Up next for Canada is the team's final pool-play game, facing Team USA on Monday at 11:10 p.m. ET to decide which team will finish in the top spot in Group A as the quarterfinal bracket begins to develop.
Later on, Newell got the start in goal for the third straight game for China, and though Sweden won 2-1, Newell continued her strong play, allowing just four goals in those three games and stopping 31 shots. China will await the outcome of the Sweden-Denmark game Tuesday at 8:10 a.m. ET to see whether it will advance to the quarterfinals. Only a Danish win in a shootout will allow China to advance, as both teams would finish with five points in the standings and China would move on thanks to its 3-1 win over the Danes in which Newell was the winning netminder.
