Tigers Take Two to Open Santa Barbara Tournament
March 11, 2022 | Softball
KorWins over Sacred Heart and event host UC Santa Barbara started the five-game weekend for the Princeton softball team as it wraps its spring trip to Southern California.
The day began with an 11-3, six-inning win over Sacred Heart. Princeton scored in three of its five at-bats, with an eight-run second inning giving Princeton an 8-0 lead. A Sophia Marsalo single started the winning, and after Grace Jackson reached on an error that brought home Marsalo, Lauren Sablone hit a two-run homer to make it 3-0 on what was Sablone's first career home run. Haley Hoffman followed that two batters later to make it 4-0 on a solo shot. With Princeton up 5-0 later in the inning after Serena Starks singled and later scored, Marsalo turned the batting order over and picked up base hits by Allison Ha and Adrienne Chang base hit to make it 7-0. Sablone later followed a Jackson hit for the final run of the inning.
In the third, Ha had the third base hit of the inning and picked up a leadoff single from Hoffman to make it 9-0.Â
Starter Ali Blanchard finished four shutout innings, but after Blanchard left the game, Sacred Heart broke through on two walks, two hit batters and an Emily Carroll two-run single. Kira Ferraiolo, from next door to Princeton in Montgomery, N.J., had an RBI groundout for the third run.
Princeton got one of the runs back in its half of the fifth, when a Starks base hit and an error off a ball hit by Ashley McDonald made it 10-3 for the Tigers. Princeton then ended it early in the sixth, getting a walk to Jackson, a double for Sablone and a Cate Bade run-scoring base hit to invoke the eight-run rule.Â
Starks and Sablone each had three hits in the opener while Sablone drove in three runs and Marsalo had two RBI.Â
In game two, Princeton and host UCSB, coached by Tiger alumna Brie Galicinao '02, took a scoreless game into the sixth before Princeton won 3-1 with all four of the game's runs coming in the sixth.
Starks began the sixth with a base hit, and Ha reached on an error to put two on for Chang, who had an RBI groundout to pick up Starks put Princeton on the board. Marsalo then did the same, bringing home Ha to push the Tiger lead to 2-0. An overthrow then brought home Marsalo to push Princeton's lead to 3-0.
Three base hits and a Korie Thomas sacrifice fly put UCSB on the board, but Alexis Laudenslager turned in a complete-game win, giving up a run on seven hits and three walks, striking out three.
Princeton will play two again on Saturday at UCSB, facing Sacred Heart at 4:30 p.m. ET (live stats) and Manhattan (live stats) following at 6:30 p.m. ET.Â
