Baseball Drops Doubleheader to No. 23 Mississippi State
March 13, 2022 | Baseball
Starkville, Miss. — Princeton wrapped up its weekend in Starkville with a pair of defeats to No. 23 Mississippi State—3-2 in the day's matinee and 9-1 in a seven-inning series finale.
Game 1
Princeton had a promising start to the twin bill's first game. Singles from Alejandro Espinel and Nadir Lewis put Tigers on the corners. Then, with two outs, Matt Scannell hit a hard grounder to first and turned on the afterburners to beat the throw and plate Espinel.
The Bulldogs answered in the top of the third with a bases-loaded walk, then edged in front on a sacrifice fly later in the inning. Andrew D'Alessio did well to escape further damage, picking off a Mississippi State baserunner to end the inning with the hosts in front, 2-1. The Bulldogs later added a third run with an RBI single in the sixth inning.
The Tigers made it interesting down the stretch. In the top of the ninth, Eric Marasheski led off with a single, Nick DiPietrantonio put the tying run on base with a knock into left field, then Noah Granet loaded the bags with a base hit of his own.
Brendan Cumming stepped up to the plate and skied a fly ball deep to left field, which the Mississippi State outfielder lost in the sun and let drop, which allowed Marasheski to score to make it a 3-2 ballgame. However, Cumming and Granet miscommunicated and overlapped on the base path, resulting in Cumming being called for the second out of the inning. A spectacular flash of the leather from the Bulldogs' shortstop cut the Princeton comeback just short.
Game 2
Mississippi State asserted their dominance from the jump in the series final, scoring one in the first frame and six in the second to take an early 7-0 lead. The Bulldogs added two more with a two-run double in the fifth.
A solo home run to center field from Lewis put Princeton on the board, but it would be nothing more than a consolation run as Mississippi State completed the sweep with a 9-1 win.
Princeton returns to action on Friday, March 18 with the first of a four-game weekend series against Towson.
