Princeton team notes:
NCAA team qualifiers and finishes • Princeton's six qualifiers are tied for the second-most in program history, and all four occasions of Princeton getting six or more qualifiers have come in the last five competitive seasons: 2017 (seven), 2019 (six), 2020 (six) and 2022 (six). Princeton finished 15th in 2019, its best since a 14th-place finish in 1978. The '78 finish was the second-best in program history behind a fifth-place finish in 1951.
Best individual finishes • Princeton has had one individual champion, with Bradley Glass '53 winning the unlimited division in 1951. Princetonians have made the final five other times, most recently with Greg Parker '03 (174) in 2002. The best finish of the Chris Ayres era (since 2007 NCAAs) came from Matthew Kolodzik '21 (149) in 2018.
Quite a resume • Since Chris Ayres took over the program ahead of the 2006-07 season, a stretch of 16 NCAA Championships (counting 2020 since participants were named but not 2021 since Princeton did not compete) a run of 21 Princeton wrestlers have earned a total of 44 NCAA Championship bids, all since 2010. In the first 75 NCAA Championships between 1928 and the last one before Ayres took over in 2006, Princeton saw 47 wrestlers earn 70 bids.
Some new, some experience • Of the six Tiger qualifiers, three have wrestled before at the NCAAs and three are making their debut. Junior Patrick Glory (125) finished sixth in 2019. Classmates Quincy Monday (157) and Travis Stefanik (184, then at 174) made their debuts in 2019, going 0-2. This will be the NCAA Championship debut for junior Marshall Keller (149), freshman Luke Stout (197) and sophomore Matt Cover (HWT).
Tough competition • Of Patrick Glory's 17 matches this season, 10 came against fellow NCAA participants, or 59 percent. For Marshall Keller, it's 43 percent of his 21 matches this season coming against wrestlers in this year's bracket. For Quincy Monday, it's 48 percent, or 11 of 23. For Travis Stefanik, it's 7 of 18, or 39 percent. For Luke Stout, it's 42 percent, or 10 of 24. For Matt Cover, it's 6 of 23, or 26 percent.
All-Americans • Of Princeton's 23 All-American finishes, 10 have come during Chris Ayres' coaching tenure, and all since 2016. Of the 13 wrestlers to earn All-American honors, five have come during Ayres' tenure.
Talented coaches • Head coach Chris Ayres set the career (120) and school (39) records for wins in a season at Lehigh while also earning All-America at 157 in 1999. AHC Joe Dubuque won the 2005 and 2006 NCAA title at 125. Fellow AHC was an All-American at 141 at Virginia Tech in 2001 and 2002. Assistant coach Nate Jackson was an All-American at Indiana in 2016 (174) and 2017 (184).
