Baseball Falls Short to Split Four-Game Series Against Towson
March 20, 2022 | Baseball
Towson, Md. — Princeton was defeated by Towson, 6-5, in Sunday's series finale as the hosts earned a four-game series split.
Brendan Cumming continued his hot hitting streak after going 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored in the series bookend. He went 12-for-22 with 13 RBI and 10 runs scored this weekend and now boasts a .397 season batting average.
Two-way player Jackson Emus also impressed this weekend, going 2-for-4 with an RBI in the series finale. He leads the team with a .440 batting average. Finally, freshman Matt Scannell is heating up at the plate. He went 2-for-4 and drove in three of Princeton's five runs on Sunday.
After setting a program record with a combined 39 runs in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, the Princeton bats wasted no time in the Sunday matinee. An RBI single from Emus opened the scoring, and a fielder's choice forced by Scannell doubled the Princeton advantage in the top of the first inning.
Towson tied the game with a two-run double in the bottom of the third, but Princeton restored its lead with RBIs from Scannell and Noah Granet. Towson punched back to edge back in front with three runs in the bottom of the third to make it a 5-4 ballgame. The hosts added to their lead with a sac fly in the bottom of the sixth.
Princeton came back to within one, with Scannell driving in his third RBI of the game with a double down the right-field line. A leadoff single and a walk saw Tiger baserunners on the corners with one out in the top of the ninth, but the Towson pitcher buckled down to force the final two outs and secure a 6-5 series-splitting victory.
Princeton now turns its attention to Ivy League play and will host Yale in its conference and home opener with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 26 with first pitch slated for 11:30 a.m.
