Baseball Begins Ivy Play With Home-Opener Against Yale
March 24, 2022 | Baseball
Princeton, N.J. — Princeton prepares to open its Ivy League slate this weekend as it hosts Yale at Clarke Field for a three-game series. This weekend marks the first time the Tigers have hosted games at Clarke Field since April 28, 2019. The series will start with a doubleheader on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and follow with the series finale on Sunday at noon. All games will be available to stream with a subscription to ESPN+.
Princeton enters the matchup at 2-13 after splitting a four-game series against Towson last weekend. Brendan Cumming was named Ivy League Player of the Week after leading a red-hot Princeton offense which averaged 12.5 runs per game in the series. He went 12-for-22 with 13 RBI, 10 runs scored, three doubles, and three home runs across the four-game set. Cumming was nationally recognized for his efforts as he was awarded the D1Baseball Golden Spikes Performance of the Week for his program-record-breaking nine-RBI game against Towson in the series' third game.
Cumming comes into the weekend ranked third on the team with a .382 batting average. Nadir Lewis ranks second with a .426 average while leading the team with 18 RBI. Two-way player Jackson Emus leads the way with a .440 batting average.
Emus will likely start on the mound for one of Princeton's three games against Yale this weekend. In four starts, he's tallied 24 strikeouts with just eight walks in 21 innings pitched this season. Tom Chmielewski and Andrew D'Alessio are also expected to start. D'Alessio leads Princeton starters with a 5.25 ERA and 24.0 innings pitched after four starts. Chmielewski earned his first win of the season in Princeton's 21-8 victory against Towson. He's got 15 strikeouts in 18.0 innings pitched after four starts.
Yale rolls into Ivy League play with an 8-6 record. The Bulldogs have six wins in their last eight games. Yale holds a 154-194-4 all-time series lead, but Princeton has an 81-78-1 advantage at home.
