No. 11 Women's Lacrosse Falls To No. 5 Stony Brook
March 29, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse
PRINCETON -- After missing its most recent game and multiple subsequent practices with multiple players battling the flu, a slow start was not out of the question for No. 11 Princeton (6-2, 1-0 Ivy) at Sherrerd Field, and with No. 5 Stony Brook (7-2, 1-0 America East) on the other side an early deficit was too much for the Tigers to overcome in a 16-8 defeat. The loss is the second in a row for the Tigers, both to teams inside the Top-10.
The Tigers conceded the game's first seven goals, and never were able to get closer than six the rest of the way as the Sea Wolves had an answer each time Princeton tried to mount a rally.
Ultimately, it was that 7-0 start for Stony Brook which was the difference. Kyla Sears scored with 2:53 remaining in the second quarter, from there on in the game was about as even as they come -- Stony Brook holding a slim 9-8 edge over the final 32:53 of the game.
Once the Sea Wolves took control early. they had an answer to every Princeton challenge. The Tigers did not put together back-to-back goals until their final two.
Sears had a goal and three assists for the Tigers, Grace Tauckus had a hat trick. Kari Buonanno, McKenzie Blake and Nina Montes also scored, as did defender Marge Donovan who netted her second career goal while also winning five draws.
In goal, Sam Fish had 11 saves, including six in the first half and five in the third quarter.
Siobhan Rafferty had four goals for Stony Brook, Kailyn Hart had three. Jaden Hampel had three goals and three assists. Ellie Masera had two goals, two assists, 12 draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Kameron Halsall made the late start in goal and had nine saves.
The Tigers are off this weekend, returning to action April 9 at Brown at 1 p.m. Princeton's next home game is April 13 against Maryland at 7 p.m.
