Men’s Basketball Wins Outright Ivy Title With 93-70 Win at Penn

PHILADELPHIA – The Princeton University men's basketball team won the 2021-22 Ivy League Championship outright Saturday night inside the Palestra, upending the University of Pennsylvania 93-70 in a contest that saw senior Jaelin Llewellyn join the 1,000-point club.
The Tigers' outright Ivy League title came on the back of a 12-2 record in conference play.
Llewellyn led the way with a game-high 24 points on 10-for-18 shooting from the field, along with 4-for-9 shooting from three. Junior Tosan Evbuomwan added 23 points on 9-for-14 shooting, while also pulling down a game-high eight rebounds and handing out a game-high seven assists. Senior Drew Friberg also went 6-for-10 from the field, and 5-for-8 from three to finish with 18 points, while sophomore Matt Allocco added 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting.
As a team, the Tigers shot an efficient 55.2% from the field on 37-for-67 shooting, along with 46.2% from three, on 12-for-26 shooting.
The Quakers opened the game with a 6-0 run, but a three-point play by Friberg got the Tigers on the scoreboard with 17:17 on the clock. A layup by Evbuomwan at 16:39 would spark a 7-0 run, that saw the Tigers surge ahead, 10-9, following a pull-up three-pointer from the top of the arc by Friberg with 15:49 left in the half.
A step-back jumper by Llewellyn with 11:52 remaining in the half kept the Tigers in front, 19-17, then a Llewellyn three-pointer with 10:28 on the clock led off a 9-0 run, that gave Tigers a 30-21 advantage at 7:14.
With 4:25 remaining in the half, Llewellyn scored the 1,000th point of his career, after backing his defender down, pump faking, then stepping through and laying the ball in, also giving Princeton a 34-25 lead. He would drain a deep-three-pointer with 00:33 left in the half, and the Tigers would take a 45-31 advantage into the half.
While the Quakers were able to trim the lead to eight points, 50-42, with 17:00 left to play, a layup by senior Elijah Barnes sparked a 9-0 run that saw Princeton take a 19-point lead, 67-48, with 12:25 on the clock following a layup by Llewellyn.
Four-straight Evbuomwan free throws kept the Tigers in front by 18 points, 78-60, with 7:25 remining, before the Tigers extended their lead to 23, 89-66, with 2:31 left to play, after back-to-back Allocco three-pointers.
Junior Keeshawn Kellman threw down a powerful two-handed slam with 1:13 on the clock, and Princeton held on for the 93-70 triumph.
