Baseball's Late Rally Stymied by William & Mary

Williamsburg, Va. — A three-run home run by Nadir Lewis in the ninth gave Princeton a glimmer of hope, but the Tigers fell to a 9-6 scoreline in a visit to William & Mary on Sunday.
Princeton tallied its highest run total of the season and reached double digits in hits for the second time this season. Brendan Cumming led the Tigers on offense, going 3-for-4 with a solo homer, an RBI, and two runs scored. Lewis—Princeton's leading hitter—had his third multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBI, and a run scored.
William & Mary jumped out to an early lead with an RBI single in the first and second inning to take a 2-1 lead. Cumming cut that deficit in half, ripping a rope over the wall in center field in the top of the third.
William & Mary restored its two-run lead in the bottom of the fourth as a Tribe hitter squeezed an RBI single through the right side of the infield to make it a 3-1 ballgame. After a leadoff walk in the fifth, Jordan Kelly scored the Tigers' second run of the day with the help of a sacrifice fly from Lewis.
The one-run deficit would be the closest Princeton would get for the remainder of the game, however. The Tribe scored the game's next five runs, with four coming in the sixth inning, to take an 8-2 lead. Scott Bandura pulled one back with his first RBI of the season made it 8-3 in the seventh before William & Mary tallied its ninth with an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.
A three-run shot by Lewis in the top of the ninth gave Princeton reason for optimism, but the Tribe held on for a 9-6 win.
Princeton returns to action tomorrow, March 7, for a game against Richmond at 1 p.m. before a two-game midweek series against Old Dominion on March 8 and 9.
