No. 19 Women's Water Polo Splits Two During First Day of West Coast Trip

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 19 Princeton women's water polo team split the first two games of its West Coast trip, defeating the No. 25 Cal State Northridge Matadors, 9-8, before a 12-11 overtime loss to the No. 21 San Diego State Aztecs.

The two teams played an even first quarter before a CSUN goal as time expired put the Matadors ahead, 2-1. After giving up the first tally of the second quarter, goals from Kayla Yelensky and Genevieve Fraipont tied the game at 3-all with 6:12 left in the first half. The Matadors held a 4-3 advantage at halftime.
Princeton snagged the first three tallies of the second half before CSUN got on the board, setting the score at 6-5 after 24 minutes. The Tigers began the fourth frame with three straight goals, extending its lead to four, 9-5, with 4:29 remaining. CSUN made one more push, getting within one as the clock read 34 seconds, but couldn't find the equalizer.

The two teams exchanged goals in the third quarter, leaving the game at 6-all heading into the fourth stanza. Neither team led by more than a tally in the fourth frame before Yelensky's goal with 24 seconds to go sent the game into overtime.
Each team scored once in both portions of the extra session before San Diego State's Laurene Padilla snagged the game-winner in sudden death overtime.
Princeton continues its trip in California at No. 9 Long Beach State on Tuesday (10 p.m.).
