Cornell Holds On to Take Series' Final Game
April 10, 2022 | Softball
After scoring 14 runs in 12 innings with two shutout wins on Saturday, the Princeton softball team saw Cornell bounce back to take the series finale 2-1 on Sunday at Princeton Softball Stadium at Strubing Field.
Cornell got on the board first in the fourth inning, with Hanna Crist getting hit by a pitch and coming home three batters later on a base hit by Lilly Travieso.Â
Princeton tied it up in the fifth, when Lauren Murphy drew a one-out walk and came home three batters later on a base hit from Sophia Marsalo, who finished 2 for 2 on the day and 8 for 9 on the weekend series.
The 1-1 tie lasted only until Cornell's next at-bat, when Maicie Levitt led off the inning with a single and scored two batters later when Travieso drove in her second run of the day with a base hit.Â
Princeton went down in order in the sixth and got an Ashley McDonald base hit with one out in the seventh, but Cornell pitcher Mia Burd closed out the win, giving up the run on five hits and two walks, striking out one and hitting one.Â
The result moved Princeton a half-game back of Harvard, which will host Penn on Monday to complete that weekend series and either move one game ahead of Princeton or into a first-place tie with the Tigers.
After Princeton heads to Lehigh on Wednesday for a non-league twinbill at Lehigh, the Tigers will head to Yale for two on Saturday and one on Sunday. The Sunday game will be televised by ESPNU and start at 11 a.m., earlier than the usual 12:30 p.m. league starts.
