Win and a Tie for Tigers at Lehigh; Yale Series Changes
April 13, 2022 | Softball
A win and a tie were the outcomes for the Princeton softball team on Wednesday at Lehigh, snapping a Mountain Hawks win streak in the series and marking the first time in the series' long history that the teams played to a draw.
Princeton's 3-0 win in the opener was the Tigers' first over the Mountain Hawks since 2011, with Lehigh winning the last 12 meetings. It was also Princeton's first win in the series since Lisa Van Ackeren, a 2009 Lehigh alumna, took over the program in 2013.
In the opener, Ali Blanchard went six shutout innings, giving up just two hits and walking one, striking out five. Meghan Harrington closed it out, getting the save with a one-hit seventh.Â
Princeton got on the board in the opener in the second inning when Lauren Sablone singled home pinch runner Abbie Lee after a leadoff hit from Blanchard. In the fifth, Princeton pushed the lead to 2-0 when Serena Starks had a base hit, one of her four on the day, to bring home a leadoff hit from Sablone. In the seventh, Princeton made it 3-0 with Starks doubling to follow a Cate Bade base hit.
In game two, two hits and an error added up to a run in the fourth inning to get Lehigh on the board first, but Princeton answered with three in the top of the fifth. Two walks and a Starks hit loaded the bases for Adrienne Chang, who tied it with a base hit, and Sophia Marsalo followed with a groundout that put Princeton in front 2-1. The third run of the inning came home when Ashley McDonald was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, making it 3-1.
Lehigh tied it with two runs in the sixth on three hits and two errors, and with the sun set to call it a day, the game ended in a tie when the teams were still even at 3-3 after seven innings.
Molly Chambers and Alexis Laudenslager split time in the circle in game two for the Tigers, with Chambers giving up an unearned run on four hits, striking out four in 4 2/3 innings, and Laudenslager giving up two unearned runs on four hits and a walk, fanning five in 2 1/3 innings.
Princeton's series at Yale this weekend has been adjusted due to weather. The teams will now play one game on Saturday, moving to an 11 a.m. start, and two games on Sunday, keeping the 11 a.m. start on ESPNU before the series finale follows.
