Tigers Take Series Opener at Yale
April 16, 2022 | Softball
Saturday's series opener at Yale went to Princeton in a 9-1, five-inning win as Ali Blanchard struck out eight in those five frames, giving up just a run on three hits and two walks.
Eight Tigers had hits on the day and six drove in runs.Â
After a quiet first inning, Princeton got right on it in the second, with Blanchard and Allison Ha getting back-to-back doubles to put Princeton on the board. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, an unsuccessful fielder's choice off the bat of Lauren Sablone brought home a run, and Haley Hoffman then dropped in a base hit to make it 3-0. Two batters later, a sacrifice fly from Adrienne Chang made it 4-0.
Princeton pushed the lead to 5-0 in the third, with a passed ball allowing Ha to score after she doubled earlier in the inning. In the fourth, Princeton put the game into run-rule territory with each of the first five batters reaching and an error, an RBI double from Serena Starks and RBI singles from Chang and Sophia Marsalo making it 9-0.
Blanchard took a no-hitter into the fourth with just a walk over the first three innings, but an Alex Perrin base hit, a Sam Goodcase double and a Willa Ferrer base hit added up to a run in the fourth. Blanchard and the Tigers kept Yale there, and after just a walk in the fifth, the eight-run rule ended the game for Princeton.
The Tigers will play two at Yale on Sunday, beginning with an 11 a.m. start on ESPNUÂ and ESPN+ and the second game following only on ESPN+. Live scoring will be available here.
