Men's Lightweight Rowing Retains Campbell Cup Over Columbia
April 02, 2022 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
No. 5 Princeton improved to 3-1 all-time in Campbell Cup races with a 1.5-second win over No. 6 Columbia at Overpeck Park as part of the National Collegiate Lightweight Invite.
The Tigers had about a four-seat clearance on their Ivy rivals to win the 1V and retain the Campbell Cup, crossing the finish line first in 6:22.156. Columbia would secure wins in the 2V and 3V.
In the afternoon, Princeton went back on the water to row a second session and swept all three races including an 8.3-second win in the 1V over No. 10 Mercyhurst and No. 11 MIT.
"We got some nice things accomplished today," said head coach Martin Crotty. "Our 1V had a great test against Columbia, and fought right through the finish to gain some separation and a gritty win against a tough Ivy foe. It was nice to get a win at Overpeck Park, it's a tough place to get a result and we're elated to pack the Campbell Cup on the bus back to Princeton I like the response from the 2V and the 3V, too. They regrouped after the morning and made some improvements in the afternoon. That's the type of group we want, one that learns, adapts and improves. That will bode well for us in the coming weeks. Thank you to everyone at Columbia for putting on a great event!"
Princeton begins a run of four consecutive home regattas on April 9, hosting Delaware, Dartmouth and Temple on Lake Carnegie.
