April 23, 2022 | Baseball
Princeton, N.J. — Princeton split its series-opening doubleheader with Harvard this afternoon at Clarke Field. The Crimson took game one with a 2-0 victory and the Tigers earned a win in game two with a 4-3 result.
Emus set a career high with eight innings pitched in the first game of today's twin bill. He struck out four and allowed two runs on four hits.
In game two, Tom Chmielewski earned his second win of the season behind a career-high 7.0 IP. He struck out six with no walks and allowed three runs on seven hits. Reece Rabin earned the save after he pitched the game's final two innings and shut out the Crimson with a strikeout and one hit allowed. It was his first save of the season and second of his career.
In game two, seven of Princeton's starting nine tallied a hit, while Nick DiPietrantonio led the Tigers with a pair of knocks. Nadir Lewis extended his team-leading RBI count to 32 after plating Brendan Cumming in the bottom of the first. Jordan Kelly drove in the Tigers third run of the day with an RBI single in the second, and Cumming also tallied an RBI with a sac fly on the ensuing at-bat.
Game 1
The first game of Saturday's twin bill displayed some incredible pitching from both teams. Harvard held Princeton's batters to just two hits on the day and accumulated 16 strikeouts.
The Crimson took an early lead with an RBI single up the middle in the top of the first. It doubled the advantage in the top of the third with a home run to right center for a 2-0 lead.
Jackson Emus did not allow a Harvard hit between the sixth through eighth inning. The Crimson didn't manage more than one hit in an inning all game.
Princeton didn't get its first hit of the game until the sixth inning, which featured both of the Tigers' hits on the day. With no run support, Princeton was dropped in the series opener, 2-0.
Game 2
After a true pitching duel in game one, a different tone was set early in the day's second game. Harvard opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the top of the first.
Princeton fielded an immediate response in the bottom of the inning. With Cumming on second, Lewis hit a bloop single to shallow right field to get the Tigers on the board. Crafty base-running by Lewis advanced him to third where he scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2.
Following a clean frame from Chmielewski in the top of the second, Princeton edged in front. The Tigers quickly loaded the bags with consecutive singles from DiPietrantonio, Carlos Abello, and Eric Marasheski. Kelly drove Princeton in front with an RBI single through the left side. A sacrifice fly by Cumming later in the inning gave Princeton a 4-2 advantage.
The Crimson pulled one back in the top of the fourth with a fielder's choice which allowed a baserunner to score from third to make it a 4-3 ballgame.
Following the early flurry of runs, both sides' pitching staffs locked in after the fourth. Harvard and Princeton combined for six hits from the fifth inning onwards. After Chmielewski pitched his seventh inning of the day, he was replaced on the hump by Rabin.
Rabin tossed a clean final two frames and shut out Harvard with one strikeout and just one hit allowed to earn the save and clinch the doubleheader split.
The two teams will duke it out on Sunday with the rubber match scheduled to start at noon.
