Harvard Outlasts Baseball in Extras
April 24, 2022 | Baseball
Princeton, N.J. — Despite clawing back from an 8-0 deficit, Princeton was outlasted by Harvard in 12 innings, 14-10.
The Crimson opened the scoring in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to right field. Harvard extended its lead later in the third with a three-run shot which just squeezed inside the foul pole to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
Harvard then extended its lead with a big half-frame in the fifth. An RBI single, two-run double, and RBI double in consecutive at-bats made it an 8-0 Crimson lead.
Then, the Princeton bats turned this one on its head. DiPietrantonio got it started with a sac fly in the bottom of the fifth. A leadoff home run by Marasheski and an RBI double by Granet in the sixth cut the Crimson lead to 8-3.
Things really blew open in the bottom of the seventh for the Tigers. Three walks loaded the bags with one out. A pinch-hit RBI single by Emus made it an 8-4 game. Then, with one swing of the bat, the game was tied. Kelly smacked a frozen rope off the foul pole in right field for a game-tying grand slam.
A single by Cumming on the ensuing at-bat put another Tiger on base. Then, Granet drove him home with a swing & steal RBI single to left-center. Princeton capped off a seven-run inning for a two-run lead with a Scannell RBI single into right center to take a 10-8 lead.
Unfortunately, the lead was short lived. With two outs and two runners on in the top of the eighth, Marasheski lost a pop fly in the sun which allowed a pair of Harvard baserunners to score and even the game at 10-10.
Rabin and Scannell both did well to escape jams and shut out the Harvard offense until the 12th inning. A leadoff double set the plate, and a successful bunt squeeze followed by a throwing error edged Harvard in front.
The Crimson all but sealed a hard-fought win later in the inning. An RBI single and a two-run single completed a 14-10, series-winning victory.
- Six Princeton batters contributed at least one RBI, led by Jordan Kelly—whose seventh-inning grand slam tied the game at 8-8. Noah Granet drove in a pair of runs and led the team with four hits. Matt Scannell, Nick DiPietrantonio, Eric Marasheski, and Jackson Emus also chipped an RBI. Brendan Cumming had three hits while Marasheski and Emus also had a couple knocks.
- Eight Tigers scored a run, with Marasheski and Cumming both leading the way with a pair each.
- Reece Rabin came out of the bullpen to pitch 2.1 innings and impressed once again in what was his third appearance of the week. Rabin struck out four batters with no hits and no earned runs allowed. Scannell moved from first base to the mound during extra innings and chipped in with an impressive 2.1 innings pitched. He struck out a career-high five batters and walked just one.
