Tigers Sweep Two from Penn to Open Series
April 23, 2022 | Softball
Heading into Sunday, the Princeton softball team finds itself atop the Ivy League after a twinbill sweep of Penn and Saturday's other results around the league.
With an Ivy-best 13 league wins, Princeton (21-13-1, 13-4 Ivy) leads Harvard (10-4 Ivy) by a game and a half. The Tigers will host Penn on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. for the series finale, which will be streamed on ESPN+Â with live stats available here.
In Saturday's opener, Ali Blanchard and Molly Chambers combined for a one-hit shutout, with Blanchard giving up the lone hit and a walkl over 5 1/3 innings, striking out seven, and Chambers getting the save in an inning and two-thirds, striking out one with the lone baserunner during that time reaching on an error.Â
Princeton opened the scoring in the second inning, with a single from Grace Jackson and Gianna Mavica reaching on a fielder's choice to put two on for Haley Hoffman, who singles both home to put Princeton up 2-0. Serena Starks drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth for Princeton's third run.
Grace Jackson went 3 for 3 in the first game while Starks and Hoffman had two hits each.
In game two, Alexis Laudenslager and Chambers combined to limit the Quakers to a run on four hits and four walks with 12 Penn batters going down on strikes. Laudenslager went five innings, allowing the lone run on two hits and four walks, striking out nine, while Chambers closed it out for her second save of the day, giving up two hits and striking out three.
Princeton got on the board in the first inning with a one-out triple from Sophia Marsalo preceding a Blanchard sacrifice fly. The lead became 2-0 in the third when Starks doubled and came home on a throwing error. The final Tiger run came home in the fifth when Cate Bade had a base hit and came home two batters later on a Marsalo single.
Marsalo finished 3 for 3 in game two.
