PENNSAUKEN – The Princeton Tigers needed a win.
Sitting in third place for the Sally P. Shoemaker Trophy with just the V8 race left, the Tigers needed their top boat to secure a win to earn the Ivy League title.
The V8 got out to an open water lead and held off a furious rally from Brown to collect the V8 Ivy championship.
It's the fifth straight Ivy crown for head coach Lori Dauphiny's V8 crew and eighth in the last 10 events.
"It was exciting to see the team pull together at the Ivy Championship," said Dauphiny. "The league is very strong and the competition was impressive. We are very proud of this team and their resilience this year. It was fun to be back together as a league."
The V8 got to the Grand Final with the top time in its heat (6:19.85) and second fastest time overall behind Brown (6:18.55).
4VA earned a spot in the final (7:17.57) with a second-place tally, trailing only Brown. They followed that with a victory in the Grand Final (6:52.30), over four seconds ahead of the Bears. It's the second straight Ivy title for the 4VA, the first time that boat has won consecutive crowns since 2011-13.
The 2022 Ivy League Champions' 3V8 crossed the finish line in third place (6:36.10), six seconds off the pace of Yale.
The Tigers' 2V nabbed a four-second decision (6:30.01) in its heat before placing fourth in the final (6:23.61).
Princeton had four rowers named First-Team All-Ivy in Flo Donald, Annika Maxson, Lara Valt and Isabelle Grosgogeat. Lydia Rosen and Camille Vandermeer were named Second-Team All-Ivy.
The NCAA D-I Rowing Selection Show will air on Tuesday at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com. Princeton is one of three programs along with Brown and Washington, to have competed at every NCAA Championship regatta since the inaugural event in 1997. Prior to 1997, women's crews competed at the National Collegiate Rowing Championship; Princeton won the national title in 1990, 1993, 1994 and 1995. The Tigers won the V8 national championship in 2006 and 2011 along with the 2V title in 1997.
