Women's Volleyball Dispatches Rider 3-1 in Home Opener

PRINCETON, N.J. – Buoyed by a .500 hitting percentage, the Princeton University women's volleyball team overcame Rider University, 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-16, 25-11), inside Dillon Gymnasium Wednesday night in the Tigers' first home match of the 2022 season.
Princeton was led by senior Avery Luoma, who tallied a match and career-high 23 kills on a .538 hitting percentage, and also recorded a double-double with a match-high 16 digs. Senior Lindsey Kelly also had a career night, leading the match with a career-high 61 assists, and fell just one dig short of a double-double, as she recorded nine. Freshman Lucia Scalamandre led the match in blocks, with six.
The early stages of the opening set were evenly-matched, but a freshman Valerie Nutakor Kill led off a 3-0 run that saw the Tigers gain a 9-6 advantage. A kill by senior Melina Mahood followed by a fershman Ella Bunde service ace extended Princeton's lead to five at 16-11, and the Tigers did not ease off from there. A Luoma kill put Princeton up by six at 23-17, then the Tigers would hold on for the 25-19 first set win.
Princeton got off to an impressive start in the third set, using a pair of 3-0 runs to gain a 10-3 advantage. With the Tigers up 12-7, Scalamandre reeled off three-consecutive kills to give the Tigers a seven-point lead at 15-7. From there, Princeton did not let up, sealing the set with a kill by Mahood.
Sparked by another Mahood kill, the Tigers opened the fourth set on a 6-0 run. A Luoma kill would later lead off a 4-0 run, giving Princeton a 13-4 advantage. The Tigers' lead ballooned to 13 after a kill by sophomore Mariah Haislip sparked another 4-0 run that put Princeton ahead 19-6, and the Tigers would go on triumph in the set, and 3-1 in the match.

While the Broncs took an 8-7 lead in the second set, Princeton battled back and took a 16-15 lead after back-to-back Nutakor kills. The Broncs responded with a 4-0 run and jumped ahead, 19-16, and went on to even the match up at one set each, prevailing in the set 25-23.S1: Princeton 16, Rider 11
