Women's Volleyball Sweeps FIU & FDU at Rutgers Tournament

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team had a near perfect first day at the Rutgers Tournament Saturday inside Jersey Mikes Arena, not dropping a set in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-17) win over Florida International followed by a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-21) victory over Fairleigh Dickinson.
The Tigers finished with a .360 hitting percentage across the two matches, and tallied 89 kills to just 16 errors. Princeton also had 14 service aces on the day, and 17 blocks.
Princeton vs. FIU
Senior duo Avery Luoma and Melina Mahood tied for the match-high in kills with 14 each, while senior Lindsey Kelly produced a double-double with match-highs in assists (42), digs (18), and also led the match in service aces with three. Lucia Scalamandre finished with a match-high eight blocks.
The Panthers took a 10-8 lead in the opening set, but a kill by Mahood sparked a 4-0 run that gave Princeton a 11-10 lead. The Tigers maintained a one-point advantage at 18-17, before another Mahood kill led off a 6-0 run, putting Princeton ahead 24-17. The Tigers held on from there, winning the first set 25-19.
Started by a Scalamandre kill, Princeton opened the second set with a 6-0 run. While FIU used a 4-0 run to narrow the deficit to one, 12-11, the Tigers responded with another 6-0 run, and took an 18-11 lead. Princeton had little trouble putting the Panthers way from there, with Mahood crushing the ball on set point, giving the Tigers a 25-18 win a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Florida International took a 5-4 lead in the third set, but a kill by Luoma led off a 5-0 run, giving Princeton an 8-5 advantage. A double-block by Scalamandre and Mahood extended the Tigers' lead by five at 13-8, before a kill by sophomore Mariah Haislip gave the Tigers a six-point lead at 21-15. Princeton didn't look back from there, coming out on top 25-17 in the set, and 3-0 in the match.
Princeton vs. FDU
Princeton used a balanced attack to overcome the Knights; junior Maya Satchell had a match-high 10 kills, while sophomore Gracie Wood handed out a match and career-best 32 assists, while senior Cameron Dames led the match in digs with 14. Senior Olivia Schewe led the match in blocks with five, and service aces with a career-high three.
Sophomore Shelby Fulton tallied career-highs in kills with eight, and blocks with five, where she also tied for the match-high.
Sparked by a Bishop solo block, Princeton used an early 4-0 run to take an 8-3 lead. Back-to-back service aces by Schewe saw the Tigrers expand their lead to seven at 20-13, then a kill by Bishop capitalized on set point, giving Princeton the 25-19 win.
The Knights used a 5-0 run in the second set to take an early 5-1 advantage, but a kill and a service ace by Schewe narrowed the deficit to one, 10-9. With the Knights ahead 16-15, am FDU attacking error led off a 4-0 Princeton run, that saw the Tigers take an 18-16 lead. A service ace by Satchell put Princeton ahead, 23-20, and the Tigers went on to go up 2-0 in the match after triumphing in the set, 25-22.

With the Tigers up 9-6, the Knights used a 4-0 run to tie it up at 9-9 and the set became a back-and-forth battle. With the score knotted at 14-14, a Schewe kill sparked a 5-0 run that gave Princeton a 19-15 lead, and from there the Tigers didn't look back, taking the set 25-21 after another kill by Bishop on match point.
