Women's Volleyball Earns 3-0 Sweep of Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team maintained its perfect record at the Rutgers Tournament Sunday afternoon inside Jersey Mikes Arena, dispatching the host Scarlet Knights, 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-18).
The Tigers, who did not drop a set at the Rutgers Tournament, were led by senior Melina Mahood, who tied the match-high in kills with 13. Sophomore Gracie Wood recorded a career-high in assists for the second-straight match, handing out a match-high 41, while also leading the match in service aces with three. Freshman Lucia Scalamandre had a team-high two blocks, while senior Cameron Dames' 19 digs were a match-high.
An early 4-0 run gave Rutgers a 6-1 lead in the first set, but Princeton responded with a 4-0 run and narrowed the deficit one at 6-5. Sparked by a freshman Valerie Nutakor kill, the Tigers surged ahead after a 3-0 run, 10-8, but Rutgers would use a 7-0 run to jump ahead, 16-13. With help from consecutive service aces by Wood, the Tigers tied it at 16-16, then took a 19-18 after a kill by Scalamandre. The Tigers earned set point after another Mahood kill, then Scalamandre hammered one down the middle for the first set victory, 25-22.
Additionally, senior Avery Luoma was named Rutgers Tournament MVP and to the All-Tournament Team, while Mahood and Dames also garnered All-Tournament Team honors. Luoma averaged 4.50 kills per set on a .413 hitting percentage, 2.0 digs, also had four blocks, while Mahood averaged 4.50 kills on a .413 hitting percentage, and tallied four blocks. Dames averaged 4.78 digs, and and also handed out six assists.
A kill by sophomore Mariah Hailsip sparked an early 4-0 run, giving the Tigers a 7-5 lead in the second set. Rutgers battled back, taking the lead at 12-10, but Princeton tied it up at 12-13 after a kill by Nutakor. Princeton then took a 16-14 lead, following a 3-0 run sparked by another kill by Nutakor. The set was a back-and-forth battle from there, and with the score tied at 24-24 a kill by Mahood sparked a 3-0 run, of which the Tigers used to close out the set, prevailing 26-24.

With the score tied at 9-9, a Scalamandre kill followed by back-to-back Luoma kills saw Princeton surge ahead, 12-9. Shortly after, the Tigers extended their advantage to seven at 20-13, following a 4-0 run.
