Yale Takes Weekend Opener over Princeton, 3-1
January 20, 2023 | Women's Ice Hockey
A pair of first-period goals, both in 4-on-4 play, helped lift No. 2-ranked Yale to a 3-1 win over the Princeton women's hockey team Friday night at Baker Rink.
Goals from Vita Poniatovskaia and Claire Dalton 64 seconds apart less than five minutes into the game gave Yale a 2-0 lead. Princeton drew a tripping penalty on Yale just more than two minutes into the game, but only 35 seconds later a Princeton interference penalty put the teams back at even strength, and Yale scored the first of the two goals 20 seconds into the 4-on-4 stretch.
With less than three minutes to go in the first period, Princeton rookie Katherine Khramtsov swiped the puck from a Yale skater in the neutral zone and found herself with just one defender and netminder Pia Dukaric to beat, threading it through to pull Princeton within a goal.
The Bulldogs, though, let Princeton no closer and added an Anna Bargman goal before the third period was halfway through, putting the lead back at two.
Yale had a 26-21 edge in shots on goal and a 51-46 advantage in overall shots.
Princeton will host Brown Saturday at 3 p.m. to wrap the weekend. The game will mark the annual Denna Day in honor of Denna Laing '14, who suffered a spinal cord injury while playing professional hockey in 2015 and returns to Baker Rink each year, participating in a pregame ceremonial puck drop. Tickets are available here.
