Wunder Scores Pair as Princeton Shuts Out Harvard on #Hobey100 Weekend
January 07, 2023 | Women's Ice Hockey
Issy Wunder scored twice, both in the third period, Sarah Fillier added a third, as the Princeton women's hockey team was a 3-0 winner over Harvard before a crowd of 1,544 on Saturday afternoon at Baker Rink as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Baker Rink's Jan. 5, 1923 opening.
Wunder's rookie classmate Taylor Hyland made 32 saves to get the win, earning her first career shutout.
"It's been really fun. It's something we've been excited about all year," Wunder said about the Hobey 100 weekend. "It's been circled on the calendar for all of us, and it's just been a really cool experience, seeing the Stanley Cup, seeing all the alumni how much the program means to so many people has been really impactful and it's a lot more than just the hockey on the ice."
Princeton began the third period with more than four and a half minutes left on a five-minute hit-from-behind penalty and then went on a 5-on-3 advantage two minutes into the period on a tripping penalty for the Crimson. In the closing seconds of the 5-on-3, Dominique Cormier fired from the top of the slot and Wunder tipped the shot in front of the net, at last breaking the scoreless deadlock to get Princeton on the board.
Wunder struck again less than five minutes later after Sarah Fillier flipped a puck out of the corner in Princeton's defensive end. Wunder picked up the loose puck still in Harvard's attacking zone, worked around a Crimson defender in the neutral zone, and slipped it around Harvard netminder Alex Pellicci to push the lead to 2-0 with 11-plus minutes left in the game.
Wunder extended her point-scoring streak to an eighth straight game, amassing 11 of her 15 points on the season during the current run. It was Wunder's fourth multi-point game as a Tiger and her first two-goal game, coming as she scored goals in back-to-back games for the first time with Princeton along with a goal Friday night.
Fillier, who joined Wunder and Cormier in having a two-point game, scored with just more than two minutes left in the game, putting in a rebound off another long Cormier shot that nicked off sister Kayla Fillier on its way toward goal, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Cormier's two-point game was the sophomore's first of the season and third of her Tiger career, and Sarah Fillier made it a season-best four games in a row with points, scoring eight points over that span. Sarah Fillier, a junior, moved her career scoring totals to 54 goals, now tied for 15th in program history, 81 career assists, good for seventh, and 135 points, just 12 out of Princeton's career top 10. Kayla Fillier also made it four straight games with a point, a career-best run for the senior.
Princeton outshot Harvard 83-54 overall, and the teams were even 32-32 in shots on goal.
"I thought they played great," Princeton coach Cara Morey said. "Tonight was a completely different game (than Friday's win over Dartmouth) where we had to keep going, keep going, keep going, and then it finally broke open in the third. I thought they did everything we asked of them and they had a great weekend."
The Tigers will reach the midpoint of the ECAC Hockey season next weekend, heading out on the road to take on Cornell and Colgate.
