Sykes, Broex Score As Princeton Takes Down Dartmouth 2-1, Showdown At Yale Ahead
October 21, 2023 | Field Hockey
The Princeton field hockey team got a first quarter goal from Ottilie Sykes and a third-quarter goal from Merle Broex to defeat Dartmouth 2-1 on a very rainy day in Hanover. The biggest moment of the Tigers' trip this weekend, though, actually came Friday night, when they were in their hotel watching video of the Big Green.
It was around that time that Yale scored the only goal of its game against Columbia, and that 1-0 win by the Bulldogs rendered Princeton's game against Dartmouth fairly meaningless — at least as far as the Ivy League tournament was concerned. With that outcome, Yale set up a showdown Friday in New Haven against Princeton that will decide the final league tournament spot, and nothing that happened between the Tigers and Big Green was going to change that.
As for its game this weekend, Princeton certainly didn't play like a team that had nothing riding on the outcome. The Tigers built a 2-0 lead when Sykes scored off a penalty corner (assists to Helena Große and Sam Davidson) in the opening quarter and then Broex did the same after a Dartmouth save off another corner. Th Big Green hardly gave up, scoring a goal five minutes into the fourth quarter — its first goal against Princeton since 2015 — and then peppering the Tiger cage in the final minutes, forcing Robyn Thompson to make three of her four saves in the final quarter, including two big ones off a penalty corner with two minutes to play.
Cornell's win over Brown Friday also ensured that Princeton cannot win even a share of the Ivy title. The Tigers have won 27 Ivy championships, more than the rest of the league combined. Now they have six days to get ready for a one-game mini-tournament.
