Penn Tops Princeton In Two OTs
October 04, 2023 | Field Hockey
Penn's Sophie Freedman reversed in a blocked shot off a penalty corner with three minutes left in the second overtime to give Penn a 3-2 win over Princeton Wednesday afternoon.
The win moved Penn into a first-place tie with Harvard at 3-0 in the league, while Princeton is now tied with Cornell for third at 2-1. The Tigers have a quick turnaround, with a trip to Brown Friday before their final league game Sunday at home against Syracuse.
Penn led 1-0 at the half and 2-0 one minute into the second half, and it looked like the Quakers had salted the game away with a third goal a few moments later. That goal, though, was disallowed by the officials, and Princeton stormed back, as Lily Webb tipped in a cross from Clare Brennan with 6:04 left in the third quarter and Bridget Murphy finished a great individual effort to tie it four minutes later.
The game made it to OT and then into a second OT before Freedman's winner. The original shot off the penalty corner was blocked, but it bounced to Freedman, who pushed it to her left and then crushed a reverse into the back of the cage.
Princeton's Robyn Thompson was once again strong in goal with nine saves, including a great stop off another corner with 12 minutes left in regulation.
The win snapped a 17-game Penn losing streak to the Tigers.
