November 30, 2023 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON – The No. 25 Women's Basketball Team defeated the Seton Hall Pirates, 75-71, at Jadwin Gym in double overtime.
Skye Belker's mid-range jumper with 37 seconds to go in the second overtime proved to be the game-winner. After a Seton Hall miss, the Tigers hit three free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
It was only the fifth game in program history to go to at least double-overtime and the first since a 70-61 loss to St. Joseph's on December 12th, 2010.
The contest got to an extra session when Seton Hall's Micah Gray hit a three-point shot with no time remaining on the clock to tie the game at 59-all.
Belker and Gray exchanged threes in the first overtime before the Tigers took a 67-64 lead with 1:40 left. Gray hit her seventh three-pointer of the night to even the score and push the game to a second overtime.
After two free throws from the road team's Azana Baines, Belker hit this basket to put Princeton in front for good.
Seton Hall ran out with eight of the first 10 points of the game before Princeton ended the first quarter on a 15-4 run and held a 17-12 lead after 10 minutes.
The second stanza was a back-and-forth affair with 11 different lead changes as neither team led by more than three points as the score was knotted at 29-all at halftime.
Head coach Carla Berube's team ripped off 10 of the first 13 points out of the break to go in front, 40-32, with 5:36 to go in the third frame, but Seton Hall countered with 10 of 12 to tie the game at 42-all. Princeton went on to hold a 48-46 lead as the fourth quarter got underway.
Princeton led by five three separate times in the final stanza, but Seton Hall scored five points in the final 17 seconds to get the battle to overtime.
The last six meetings between Princeton and Seton Hall have been decided by 10 points or less.
Princeton forced 28 turnovers which is the most by Seton Hall since it lost to UT-Arlington in November of 2016. The Tigers blocked 10 shots and had 11 steals in the win. Kaitlyn Chen led the Tigers with 21 points while Belker finished with 18. Parker Hill had four blocks and four swipes in a career-high 29 minutes.
The Tigers will head on the road this weekend to take on Rhode Island on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
