Hong, Ehling Win Events At Big Al Invitational As Princeton Grabs The Team Lead
December 01, 2023 | Men's Swimming and Diving
The Princeton men's swimming and diving team sits in first place after Friday's results at the Big Al Invitational at DeNunzio Pool. Princeton holds a 45.5-point edge over Penn State, with 299.5 points to 254 for the Nittany Lions.
Princeton dominated two events, which more than built the lead. First was the 200 individual medley, where Tyler Hong's 1:44.63 led a 1-2-3-5 Tiger parade to the wall, giving the hosts 67 points in the event to 27 for the Nittany Lions. Hong, second place finisher Max Kreidl and third place finisher Noah Sech all met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard, while Lucas Strobek in fifth place came within a second of doing so himself.
John Ehling was the winner of the 500 free with a 4:18.39 time that also met the Division I NCAA provisional standard and won the race by more than a second over Penn States's Eduardo Cisternas. Behind Ehling, Princeton also finished fifth (Mitchell Schott), sixth (Arthur Balva and eighth (Peyton Werner), giving the Tigers 58 points in the event to 17 for Penn State.
Hong, Sech, Connor McKenna and Schott combined to finish second in the 400 medley relay.
The event continues Saturday and Sunday, with preliminaries at 10 and finals at 6 Saturday.
