No. 12 Princeton Opens Weekend With 6-0 Win Over RPI
December 01, 2023 | Women's Ice Hockey
Sarah Fillier and Sarah Paul had a goal apiece, Emma Kee and Issy Wunder had one each, and Jennifer Olnowich had a 22-save shutout as the No. 12-ranked Princeton women's hockey team opened an ECAC Hockey weekend with a 6-0 win over Rensselaer on Friday night at Baker Rink.
Princeton opened the scoring on a power-play goal with less than four minutes to go in the first period as Sarah Paul threaded a shot from the top of the circle to RPI netminder Amanda Rampado's left.
It stayed there only into the first minute of the second period. Issy Wunder stopped an RPI clearing attempt near center ice and sent the puck ahead to Emerson O'Leary for a centering pass to Sarah Fillier for the finish just 30 seconds into the middle frame. The same trio combined for a goal with just less than three minutes to go in the period, with O'Leary winning a puck along the boards in Princeton's attacking zone and centering it for Wunder who found Fillier at the dot to Rampado's right and a 3-0 lead.
Five-plus minutes into the third period, Dominique Cormier took away a puck along the goal line and sent it forward to Emma Kee, who netted her first goal of the season to make it 4-0, and after Annie Kuehl had a takeaway in Princeton's defensive zone on the way to a 2-on-2 chance, Paul had the finish to give Princeton a 5-0 lead with less than eight minutes left in the game.
Wunder had the final goal with just 12 seconds to go after a Fillier shot went wide, O'Leary recovered the puck and sent it to Wunder in the slot.
The game was Paul's second career two-goal game, with the other coming against RPI on Nov. 5, 2021, and it continued Paul's scoring streak to a sixth game. Paul has five goals and three assists over the last six games for eight points.
Fillier's three points drew her closer to moving up on Princeton's career scoring lists. Now with 72 career goals, Fillier remains 13th, three back of 12th. With 92 career assists, Fillier stayed in fourth place, two back of third, and with 164 career points, Fillier remained sixth, now six back of fifth.
Wunder joined O'Leary and Fillier with a three-point night, with Wunder getting her third three-point night of the season and O'Leary getting her first career three-assist and three-point game. Olnowich's shutout was the fourth of her career and first since Nov. 18, 2022 against St. Lawrence.
Princeton will wrap the weekend with Union visiting for a 3 p.m. start on Saturday. Tickets and links to follow the game are available here.
