
Men's Basketball Falls At Saint Joseph's, 74-70

PHILADELPHIA – The Princeton University men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2023-24 season Sunday afternoon inside Hagan Arena, falling just short to Saint Joseph's 74-70.
Despite the loss, the Tigers' five road victories still lead the nation. Princeton also shot 42.1% from three, going 16-for-38, with the Tigers' 16 makes being a season-high.
Sophomore Xaivian Lee led the Tigers in scoring with 20 points and for the second-straight game pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, a figure that tied his career-high. Freshman Dalen Davis finished with a season-high 13 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the field and 3-for-3 shooting from three.
Princeton got off to a strong start, with back-to-back three-pointers by Lee and junior Blake Peters putting the Tigers up 6-2 with 18:44 on the clock. Princeton would then extend its advantage to seven, 11-4, with 16:50 remaining in the half after a short jumper by Lee and a senior Matt Allocco three-pointer.
The Hawks would soon get hot, using a 12-0 run to surge ahead, 27-22, at 5:19. Layups by sophomore Jack Scott and Lee put Princeton in front again, 31-30, with 1:24 left in the half but SJU would take a 33-31 advantage into halftime.
Princeton opened the second half with three-pointers by sophomore Caden Pierce and Peters, jumping ahead 37-33 with 18:51 remaining. Five-straight Lee points saw the Tigers extended their lead to eight at 17:21, 42-36, but a 7-0 run by the Hawks made it a one-point game, 43-42, with 14:26 remaining.
A 9-0 Saint Joseph's run saw the Hawks take the lead, 54-47, with 9:47 on the clock. Davis took over down the stretch, with drilling a pull-up jumper then a three-pointer to put the Tigers back in front with 4:01 left to play, 65-63. The game of runs continued with Saint Joseph's retaking the lead with 0:11 remaining, 72-68, after a 7-0 run. While Lee drained a pair of free throws with 0:07 on the clock, the Hawks would hold on for the 74-70 victory.
