Women's Track & Field Finishes Day At Joe Handelman Invitational

PRINCETON, NJ - The Princeton women's track and field team wrapped up its Joe Handelman Invitational this Saturday evening in Jadwin Gym. The Tigers had some notable performances including the freshman Angela McAuslan-Kelly securing a first place finish and a spot in the Princeton indoor record book for the weight throw, and Shantell Kwofie who placed first in the 60m hurdles, third in the shot put, and second in the 600m.

The Princeton women earned a 1-2-3 sweep in the weight throw with the freshman Angela McAuslan-Kelly taking first with a final result of 19.17m (62-10.75). Angela enters her distance in the Princeton indoor record book taking 4th place, just behind Thanithia Billings from 2011 in third. Annika Kelly took second place with 17.94m (58-10.25), and Siniru Iheoma captured third with 17.15 (56-3.25).

In the long jump, Julia Jongejeugd represented Princeton. In the field of eight competitors, Julia placed third with a result of 5.29m (17-4.25). On the other side of the field, Madeleine Wood, competing in the high jump, finished in first place with a result of 1.69m (5-6.50). Audrey Kirkutis found the podium with a 1.60m (5-3.00) finish to take third, and Amy Aririguzoh tied for sixth with a result of 1.50m (4-11.00). Moving on to the pole vault, Tessa Mudd captured another Princeton first-place finish with a result of 4.00m (13-1 ½ft).

Looking now towards the women's 60m hurdles, freshman Shantell Kwofie made an impressive debut in the indoor meet. She clinched victory in the 60m hurdles, completing the race in 8.90 seconds. Meanwhile, Amy Aririguzoh, competing two lanes away from Kwofie, finished in 4th place with a time of 9.90 seconds.

Four Tigers competed in the shot put this afternoon. Siniru Iheoma stole the show and took first place with a result of 14.88 m (48-10ft) on her last throw followed by the freshman Shantell Kwofie in third throwing 13.92 m (45-8). Makenna Marshall and Julia Jongejeugd placed fifth and sixth respectively..
In the women's 600m event, Shantell Kwofie demonstrated her prowess by ascending the leaderboard once more. The freshman completed the day with a time of 1:39.28, securing a second-place finish. On the shorter track, Franziska Burchett claimed victory in the 60m dash, crossing the finish line with an impressive time of 7.78. Alexandra Kelly, competing in the same heat, showcased her speed with a time of 8.07, earning her a commendable fifth-place finish.
In the final event of the day, the Tigers captured another 1-2-3 sweep in the 300m race. Maisha Atkinson and Brianna Mponzi, both competing in the first heat, finished first and second overall respectively with times of 40.01 and 40.13. Adelaide Asante completed the sweep with a time of 40.49.

"The Joe Handleman Invite is also a great way to both celebrate 3 months of training and break off the competition rust," said head coach Michelle Eisenreich "While there is still work to be done, I am very pleased with where our team stands and can't wait to see what we accomplish in 2024!"
