Softball Set to Open Season with Five at Liberty This Weekend
February 20, 2023 | Softball
The 2023 season will get underway this weekend for the Princeton softball team with five games at the Liberty Softball Classic in Lynchburg, Va.
Princeton enters as the defending Ivy League champion and the league's NCAA tournament representative a year ago, and the Tigers were picked first in the Ivy League preseason media poll this season, receiving 13 of the 16 first-place votes. The Tigers finished 27-17-2 last season and 17-4 in the Ivy League to win the league title, defeating Harvard in a best-of-three Ivy League Playoff Series for the NCAA tournament bid.
Replacing the Ivy League Playoff Series this year is the Ivy League Tournament, a four-team, double-elimination event held May 11-13 at the home field of the highest seed.
Princeton returns seven All-Ivy League selections from a year ago, including Ivy Pitcher of the Year Alexis Laudenslager and Ivy Rookie of the Year Sophia Marsalo, plus Ivy Coach of the Year Lisa Van Ackeren. Princeton's returning first-team All-Ivy honorees last season were Laudenslager, Marsalo (first base), Serena Starks (outfield), Allison Ha (utility) and Adrienne Chang (designated player). Grace Jackson (shortstop) and Lauren Sablone (outfield) are second-team All-Ivy returnees.
